There is no activity that brings people together more than singing. The raw power that music has to bridge the space between people and cultures is astounding. From the raw passion of football fans singing their teams anthem to the masses joining hands to belt out Auld Lang Syne as we beckon in the new year.
It is this power that makes karaoke one of the most magical ways to spend a night out with friends. There is nothing more fun than belting out your favorite songs with your nearest and dearest. I have often found that karaoke is also a great bonding experience with new friends. Especially while traveling.
And that got me thinking. What are the best travel destinations for music lovers who can’t resist the allure of karaoke? Well fear not. For I have done the leg work and have compiled this list of travel destinations that will allow you to get your fix of both.
Liverpool
The culture capital of the United Kingdom, Liverpool is one of the most famous musical destinations on the planet. Home of the Beatles and Cilla Black, Liverpool is a tour de force of musical history. Grab a drink in the Cavern club where the Beatles made a name for themselves. Visit the famous Abbey road. And marvel at the amazing architecture that makes Liverpool one of the wonders of the UK.
Liverpool is also the karaoke capital of the UK. You won’t be able to move without finding a pub or bar running karaoke. And the scousers don’t limit themselves to the night time either. There are plenty of venues running karaoke sessions in the early hours of the day. Liverpool also has a lot to offer for film and TV fans. With many of the most popular movies and shows having filmed scenes in the city. Including Peaky Blinders, Captain America, and Harry Potter.
South Korea
You will have undoubtedly been exposed to K-Pop. In the last decade it has taken the world by storm. With its infectious beats, amazing choreography, and the pure star power of its performers, it is no wonder the world has caught K-Pop fever.
Even before the rise of K-Pop, South Korea was an amazing holiday destination for karaoke lovers. It is a huge part of their culture. So much so that karaoke nights are often used by ambassadors and business dignitaries to entertain their honored guests. Karaoke bars in South Korea are also a great way to work while traveling. Women working in Korean karaoke bars and more jobs, like music bar hosts, are often backpackers looking to make a bit of money on their trip. So if you’re planning a longer trip you should consider trying your hand at working at one of the many karaoke spots.
Beyond the music scene South Korea has so many amazing activities and locales to visit like the Seorak-san national park and Jogyesa Temple. History lovers will find endless museums and temples to tickle their fancy.
Berlin
No city encapsulates a party quite like Berlin. But many people don’t realize that the city also has a rich musical history. Berlin during the 19th century was a hotspot for the most amazing operas and choirs. So make sure you pay a visit to the Berlin Philharmonie to soak up the atmosphere. And art lovers should be sure to see the East Side Gallery.
But where Berlin really shines is in its nightlife. And it isn’t just techno raves and dark warehouse parties. There are so many amazing karaoke spots to visit. Both in local pubs and private karaoke rooms. If you are staying at a hostel you will be sure to find some willing travelers ready to sing their hearts out.
One thing to keep in mind while in Berlin is that a lot of the nightclubs are very strict about their dress code. So make sure you’ve done your research and pack appropriate attire for the clubs you want to visit.
Toronto
Toronto has been on the up and up in recent years. It has gained a bit of a reputation as a hipster city. But, as we all know, hipsters do have good taste. And Toronto is proof of that. The city has a rich history of Jazz and Folk music. You will find plenty of amazing live performances every night throughout the city. Make sure to pay a visit to Friar’s Music Museum which pays homage to the musical past of Yonge street.
Toronto has a plethora of karaoke bars to choose from. You will be spoilt for choice. You have the classic karaoke bars in the center. Or, if you fancy a more private karaoke experience, then Koreatown has plenty of karaoke rooms for you to choose from. Whatever your tastes, Toronto has something for you.
